Corporate Responsibility

The full CSR document may be obtained in writing from Cathy O'Neill, Operations Director at 181 Piccadilly. Here is a summary of what it contains.

CSR Summary
For almost three hundred years Fortnum's has specialised in food and service. Therefore our CSR policy - while naturally fulfilling all the statutory responsibilities of a mature and respected pillar of the trading community - places extra emphasis on the especially relevant areas of:
- Responsible sourcing
- Proper nourishment
- Enlightened employment policies

In each of these we have a long and distinguished heritage.

Responsible sourcing
We buy our goods as close to home as we can, from suppliers with sustainable agricultural policies. We support smaller suppliers of excellent quality goods, always buying to a standard as opposed to a price. We are often the sole remaining suppliers of a particular line, doing our utmost to keep local traditions alive and profitable.

All our own-label meat products are reared organically, moving at will and eating well while alive and being slaughtered humanely.

Our teas and coffees usually originate a long way east of Piccadilly. We actively support the Fair Trade movement and are in the process of ensuring that we buy from estates whose employment practices meet EU standards.

All suppliers are requested to supply details of their own environmental policy along with a requirement to verify that fair trade and ethical standards are observed at all times. All practices are reviewed annually.

A more detailed analysis of current and developing policy is found in the full document.

Proper nourishment
We have been GM free since 2002 and have no room on our shelves for indigestible ingredients such as hydrogenated or palm oils. We are scrupulous in our insistence that as far as possible our goods are free of chemicals and residues. Again, more details are to be found in the full document.

Enlightened employment policies
As far back as 1846 Richard Fortnum left his considerable fortune to be shared among the staff of the day. During WW1 the positions of all male staff on active service were held open - far from universal practice at the time. The same spirit of valuing our staff carries forward into our fourth century.

We have never discriminated on the grounds of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation or age and never shall.
